Page 6 Line Background - How To

These are the two images that I used to make the line art for the simple background. Both photos are taken by me using a Canon EOS REBEL T3. It's always best to use your own reference photos simply because you can take the best picture for the angle you want.

Next I selected the sections I wanted to use for the line art and created a new Photoshop document to combine both photo elements together. This was the part where I tested the image in the comic document to make sure it look right.

I softened the middle section around where Princess is standing. It was mostly for personal preference and it fit the scene I was creating in my comic.

Next I open the meshed photo in Illustrator. I personally use Illustrator as a clean up step when I am inking an image. This time I used it to make line art out of a photo. Using LIVE TRACE > TECHNICAL DRAWING as a preset. Of course I adjusted and played with the THRESHOLD and MIN AREA to get the level of detail I wanted.

Saving it out, I jump back to Photoshop and open the .AI document. To change the color of the black line art, I got the the CHANNELS tab and copy the BLUE CHANNEL and invert the colors. Then SELECT > LOAD SELECTION > BLUE CHANNEL COPY. This will create a selection of the line art. I just the paint bucket and fill the selection with whatever color I desire.

Selecting the entire image I copy/paste it onto the comic page an adjust the color of the line art more using the HUE/SATURATION tool (Ctrl + U).

And that concludes how I did this incredibly simple background.

A little project/favor my Aunt ask me to do for her. She is a grade school teacher and wanted to show her new class the basic colors and how when put together, those colors can make something beautiful.

Planned for this is the Primary and Secondary colors, as well as two spreads. I have the primaries done, as seen here and I have the sketches for the secondary colors. The spreads are coming, I had one but I decided I could do better.

As to why I chose birds, I like birds, especially parrots.

All I know it... was in a twenty-six hour span of the planet's main star rotation at the height of the Carnivale.

Between the twirling masses of dignitaries, nobles and commoners all forgetting their problems, I was looking for you specifically. Like everyone else I'm sure you were just here to enjoy the revelry and anonymity that Carnivale and the masks provided and while you and the others were forgetting problems for the night, I was going to be your personal problem.

You--my dear Captain--had disrupted the flow of time with your trademark Pocket Watch, again and my employers were not happy. I mean, I really could give less of a shit but I'm a mercenary and money is life flow.

And I had you cornered, you and your fabled, magical Princess. I had you staring down the barrel of my gun.

"No hard feelings," I said, to which you reply, "There is someone behind you."

Not so surprisingly, there was another merc. I could feel the cold steel at the back of my neck. "I guess in a den of thieves and murderers there is no trust," you snarked at me. Well, with comments like that, I knew since my contract was over we could be friends.

Too bad for the other would-be assassin. My hair has a defense mechanization that allows for tar spitting and devouring of threats to my person.

"I'm your new bodyguard," I told you after my hair spit out the bones, "And don't bother arguing, my gun is still loaded."

It would make a great start to a comic project. Just for kicks.

I only really like 3 things: The colors, Ghost even if he is the secondary character in the image, and the pumpkin.

It's been awhile since I've drawn Mr. O'Lantern, almost a year in fact, and definitely not in any colored illustrations. All I have down is that his hair is orange and he is Ghost's antagonist with an affinity for pumpkins/Jack-o-Lanterns (hence the name).

Gonna go practice on the pumpkin fiend before the power goes out.

Posting the concept/sketch with the finished piece is a nice way to show what differences (major or minor) between the start to end. Also taking screenshots of progress is a nice way to show others the thought process and steps we artists use.

Anyway, Ghost and Ghoul again. I guess I like drawing them so much because they can go between solid entities to swirling, abstract figures.

Quick sketch of an old character concept. Well, not a quick sketch seeing that I started it 30mins before work and finished it after an hour of work. This is really just further practice using my new sketch brush I made. It's harder breaking in a custom brush than breaking in a new pencil. Plus, digital sketching is more time consuming.

And if you want to use the brush, it is provided HERE. It's pretty much just 5 dots with some tweaks. However, if you are too lazy to do it yourself I already made it.

I like to download "paint brushes" for Photoshop. They are pretty good at replicating an actual paint brush. They don't blend like in Painter X, but there is more control on layering in what exactly you want blended.

Clear Bags and Pimpin'

First off I'd like to tell those who don't know where to buy Clear bags that you can find them online at ClearBags.com and if you are close to Kitsap county, at Artist Edge. They are pretty cool and inexpensive and come in various sizes and great for prints.

I'm linking where to find/order them from because I couldn't find a selection at my Seattle art stores. So I had to scour the internet and my local towns.

Anyway, prints for Gamma Ray showing with Nicole Jekich and Luke Turpeinen. These are the miniture 4x6" ones. I have yet to print out the 8x10" of the Citrus Girls. Until later.

UPDATE:

New pictures of all the prints. The matting I did myself. I mounted them on a nice... I think it's 90% gray mat (I accidentally grabbed the gray instead of black...) and used spray mount to attach the display prints to them. I would just like to say I was going to frame mat them, but I almost cut my finger off. So I settled for mounting and wrapping them in ClearBags. They look nice and I don't have stitches. It was a good day for my fingers.

Orange Swirl is probably the least offensive to the eye, while Lemon Drop is blinding and painful.

Now I have to back up these files just in case my computer craps out on my again.

Yes, I put in a pun. Ha-snarf....

Anyway, new image for a gallery showing my friends and I are doing in Seattle. I've been stuck for awhile on what I wanted to do and in what kind of style. Artist block really is the worst thing possible when your job is to be creative and produce all the time.

But thankfully my inspiration came from a 3 day marathon of Ōkami ( I finally beat it after months of sitting on it) . That was pretty fun and the art style of the game got me wanting to do something similar.

The image is done in a mixture of Painter X (which is a bitch to use on a Pentium D processor) and Photoshop CS2. And of course I have a texture for CGTextures.com. Now to make 2 more like it...
